Cooking With Yarn

November 14, 2013

One of the great joys of working here at Spud & Chloë is being surrounded by people of many creative talents. It’s also really interesting to see how those talents overlap. Take Karen, for example. She’s one of the greatest cooks I know and, not surprisingly, she treats knitting patterns like recipes. If she doesn’t have the ingredient called for in the cookbook (or in this case the pattern) she makes a substitution, adds a dash of this, a pinch of this, and voilà!

Hudson Bay-Inspired.

She takes a stunning-to-begin-with-project, the Purl Bee’s Hudson’s Bay Inspired Crib Blanket, (Spud & Chloë Sweater is available at Purl Soho too!), and turns it into a giant throw blanket fit for her cabin in Northern Minnesota.

So what is a Hudson Bay blanket? They are pretty iconic, made of 100% wool and traded during the 18th and 19th century to First Nations and Native Americans in exchange for pelts. These blankets are still sold today by Hudson’s Bay and are especially popular in Canada.

Billiard, Barn, Firefly, & Lake Stripes.

The Hudson Bay Blanket inspired the Purl Bee, the Purl Bee inspired Karen, and now I’m feeling inspired! How cute would this be as a scarf?
