Modern Rib Hat Preview

November 18, 2009

Hi Spud & Chloë Friends,

I am actually posting in the air on my way to Salt Lake City. This is the first time I have had wi-fi onboard a flight. That’s pretty cool stuff. I can actually get some work done. I did realize though that I didn’t pack the color names for the new shades of Spud & Chloë so I will have to wait until I get back home to share those with you. Hopefully I will get that done this weekend. I can’t wait to share the exciting new colorways of Fine, Sweater and Outer!

I am equally excited to show you the new Modern Rib Hat I whipped up for the next free Spud says! pattern. There is nothing too interesting or fresh about a simple rib hat but that’s exactly why I wanted to put a new twist on the one I made. As you can see above the hat is very long and this gives you all kinds of styling options and versatility. The hat can be made for a child, woman or man and can be worn in a multitude of ways. Let me tell you quickly that my daughter is 10 years old and her head is 21.5 inches around. My head is 22 inches around, that’s only half an inch difference. Kids have big heads! She is wearing the adult size hat and it looks and fits great. This is just something to note when you are knitting for kids.

Let me show you some of the ways this hat can be styled!

#1) Slouch Hat style with the cuff turned up a couple of inches leaving length at the crown of the hat.

#2) The double rolled cuff style eats up the excess length at the crown to make for a fitted hat. The three layers of fabric on the cuff offers extra warmth around the ears and forehead, too.

#3) Full out modern rib worn straight with no cuff is awesome. I keep seeing younger men and women and teenagers wearing hats in this style and I love it. Full on slouch hat. Very urban and hip.

#4) A 6-inch cuff offers doubled warmth for your entire head and makes for a fitted hat on top.

The top of the hat looks like a sunburst in this beautiful shade of buttery yellow. If you haven’t knit with Firefly Sweater you are missing out. Firefly makes me crazy it is so good. It is the best yellow. Ever.

Oh well, I am well on my way across the country and at the same time I am able to share my excitement over this new hat. I love internet on the plane! I will get the new colors up for you to preview and I’ll also take a good hard look at the Spud & Chloë Color Kit which is always by my side when I am working on Spud & Chloë projects. AND this new pattern is coming to you very soon. I am hoping by early next week.

To make the size my daughter is wearing you need 2 skeins of Sweater. I am working on a stripey version (popsicle, grass, firefly, pollen, chipmunk-uh, huh!), too, it’s in my bag right now. Such a simple hat with a lot of bang for your effort! This is the kind of hat that is a go-to hat for everyday wear.

I’ll be back very soon.
